PRO-Palestinian student action emerged to coincide with a day of drama at the Institute for Political Studies in Paris, France, Sunday (28/4). President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Gabriel Attal are among the alumni of this well-known campus Sciences Po.
Protesters first occupied the campus’ central building and blocked its entrance with trash cans, wooden platforms and bicycles. They also gathered at the building’s windows, shouting pro-Palestinian slogans, and waving Palestinian flags and placards reading “We are all Palestinians.”
Friday (26/4) evening, pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel demonstrators faced each other on the road outside campus. Riot police intervened to separate the two groups.
As night fell, a dwindling group of pro-Palestinian protesters refused to budge and ignored police orders to clear the street. Others left peacefully, escorted out of the area by police.
The Gaza war created sharp divisions in France, which has the largest Muslim and Jewish populations in Western Europe. France initially sought to ban pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
One of the protesters’ demands is that Sciences Po sever ties with Israeli educational institutions. On Wednesday (24/4) evening, more than 100 pro-Palestinian protesters also occupied the Sciences Po amphitheater.

Most of them agreed to leave following discussions with management but a small group remained. They were removed by the police that night. The campus closed all buildings and shifted lecture activities online.
“We strongly condemn the actions of students that hinder the proper functioning of the institution and punish students, teachers and employees of Sciences Po,” the campus statement said.
The statement said regarding 60 protesters were inside the occupied building and that administrators were meeting with a student delegation to try to find a way out of the situation through dialogue. Louise, a protester, said the students’ actions were inspired by similar demonstrations at Columbia University in New York and other United States (US) campuses.
