Socialist Party‘s Campaign Move draws Fire

In the final stretch before crucial elections, a video promoting Carolina Tohá, the candidate for democratic socialism, has triggered a significant backlash. The video, produced by members of the Socialist Party (PS), has especially upset members of the Broad Front (FA), including Gonzalo Winter.

Titled “Intense for Tohá,” the clip uses a comedic approach, parodying a Pixar film, to champion Tohá’s candidacy. However, its satirical jabs at her political rivals have struck a nerve.

The video asserts that “Tohá is the only one who can beat the *facos* and isn’t a student in practice,” further stating, “Carolina has experience, isn’t coming to do a government in practice, and what’s better, she can win.” These statements are widely interpreted as criticisms of the current administration.

Broad Front Responds to Perceived Disrespect

Adding fuel to the fire, the video also suggests that Tohá was instrumental in salvaging President Gabriel Boric’s administration, claiming, “Without her, the government would have been a disaster.”

Constanza Martínez, a key figure in the broad Front, responded to the video’s perceived humor with strong disapproval. She described it as disrespectful to President Gabriel Boric, a member of the Broad Front, and the work his administration has undertaken.

Martínez emphasized the importance of collective obligation within the government, stating, “Governments, in good and bad, are the responsibility of all who are part of the government. In that, there is a cartoon vision, disrespectful with the president.”

Analyzing the Political Fallout

The incident underscores the fragile dynamics within Chile’s governing coalition as various factions vie for influence and recognition. The video’s critique, while aimed at promoting Tohá, has inadvertently opened up old wounds and exposed underlying tensions.

The use of humor in political campaigns is a double-edged sword. While it can attract attention and engage voters, it also carries the risk of alienating segments of the population or causing offense, as seen in this case.

Did You Know? Political campaigns increasingly leverage social media and viral videos to reach younger demographics. Though, authenticity and respect remain crucial for maintaining credibility.
