Hamburg – In a unique tribute to its rich history, Hamburger SV is set to debut a special-edition kit ahead of their Bundesliga match against Mainz on Friday evening. The fourth jersey of the season commemorates the club’s 1887th Bundesliga game – a number reflecting the year the club was founded – following their 3-2 victory over Union Berlin last Saturday. The kit isn’t just a new design; it’s a wearable history book for fans.
The limited-edition jersey features a white base with broad blue stripes, accented by gold details, including the number “1887” embroidered into the neck and the Adidas three stripes. The traditionally red shorts are a darker shade than usual. But the most remarkable feature is a unique option for fans: a custom flocking that includes the names of all 465 players who have ever represented Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga.
Those opting for the “1887 Bundesligaspiele” (1887 Bundesliga games) customization will find the names of every HSV player to have graced the league, meticulously printed within the numerals of “1887” on the back of the shirt. This includes everyone from current players to those with brief appearances, like Finn Porath, who currently plays for Schalke 04 and featured for just one minute with HSV, to club legend Manfred Kaltz, who holds the record with 581 appearances, according to Sportschau.de.
The jersey, unveiled under the motto “Sturm und Glanz” (Storm and Shine), was showcased in a photoshoot featuring Nicolas Capaldo, Luka Vuskovic, and Rayan Philippe at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The club also hosted a New Year’s reception at the art gallery on Monday evening.
This isn’t the first time this season HSV has unveiled a distinctive kit. The club has already worn a home jersey inspired by the 1994/95 design with blue shoulder detailing, a blue-white-black away kit featuring a centrally positioned rhombus, and a black alternate kit with neon accents. The team is currently ninth in the Bundesliga standings with 25 points, having extended their unbeaten run to five games after the win against Union Berlin, as reported by ZDFheute.
A History of Kit Complications
HSV’s history with special edition kits hasn’t always been smooth. Last season, a kit designed by eight girls in celebration of International Girls’ Day was deemed too similar to the home kit of 1. FC Nürnberg by match officials shortly before a game, preventing its apply. RAN.de notes this previous issue, highlighting the club’s determination to successfully launch this year’s commemorative jersey.
The Match Against Union Berlin
The commemorative kit launch follows a successful 3-2 victory over Union Berlin on February 14, 2026, at the Volksparkstadion. Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer scored twice (35th and 82nd minutes), and Nicolas Capaldo added another (45+2) to overturn a first-half lead taken by Union Berlin through a Leopold Querfeld penalty (28th minute). Andrej Ilic scored a late consolation goal for Union in the 89th minute. The win moved HSV above Union Berlin in the Bundesliga table, with both teams now on 25 points, according to Sofascore.
HSV coach Merlin Polzin expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating the game held special significance for the club due to the milestone of 1887 Bundesliga matches played. Union Berlin coach Steffen Baumgart, yet, expressed frustration with his team’s performance, noting they gave the opposition too many opportunities.
The HSV will wear the new kit for the first time when they travel to Mainz on Friday, February 20th, with the match kicking off at 8:30 PM CET and broadcast on Sky. The launch of this unique jersey is a testament to the club’s history and a celebration of every player who has contributed to its Bundesliga journey.
