Helen Dixon, former Data Protection Commissioner, has announced her resignation from the Irish communications regulator, ComReg, just one year after joining the body. In a LinkedIn post on Tuesday, Dixon stated her intention to “try something new” after 18 years in regulatory leadership roles, notably within global digital regulation.
“After over 18 years in regulatory leadership roles and in particular in global digital regulation, I’ve decided that the time is right to come at the questions and hopefully better answers from some different angles,” Dixon wrote in her post.
Dixon joined ComReg as a commissioner in February 2024, following her decade-long tenure as the head of the Data Protection Commission (DPC). The transition was foreshadowed in late 2023 when then minister for Communications Eamon Ryan announced Dixon’s departure from the DPC.
While Dixon expressed gratitude to her colleagues at ComReg, she remained tight-lipped about her future plans. “I don’t know at this point what form(s) my next act will take. I’m going to take a little time to reflect on that,” she shared in her post.
Dixon’s departure comes at a time of critically important change and scrutiny in the telecommunications and data protection sectors. Her unique experience and expertise in navigating complex regulatory landscapes are likely to be highly sought after in various industries.
Her decision to step back from public service opens up possibilities for both the Irish government and Dixon herself. The Irish government will need to find a suitable replacement who can effectively oversee the country’s evolving telecommunications and digital sectors. Meanwhile, Dixon will have the prospect to explore new challenges and contribute her insights to other areas that resonate with her.
Her future endeavors will undoubtedly be closely watched by industry professionals and policymakers alike.
