Hilary Duff, the celebrated actress and musician, has rarely discussed the details surrounding her divorce from former NHL player Mike Comrie. Now, in a candid conversation on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, hosted by Alexandra Cooper, Duff is offering a glimpse into the factors that led to the end of their marriage.
Duff and Comrie tied the knot in 2010 after a whirlwind romance that began in 2007, welcoming their son Luca in March 2012. However, the couple separated in 2014 and finalized their divorce two years later. The “Lizzie McGuire” star explained that the breakdown wasn’t a sudden event, but rather a gradual realization that the relationship had run its course. “It happened pretty fast. I can’t remember the exact moment I was like, ‘I’m gonna call this off,’” Duff admitted, according to E! News. “It just wasn’t working anymore.”
The most challenging aspect of the separation, Duff revealed, was navigating the situation with their young son, Luca, who was only a toddler at the time. “What was really hard was processing that it was happening and going through all those emotions,” she shared. “It was a really scary time to just not want to f–k up your kid.” Duff emphasized the importance of prioritizing Luca’s well-being throughout the process, putting her own feelings aside to ensure he remained secure and comfortable.
Prioritizing Luca’s Well-being
Duff and Comrie consciously worked to minimize the impact of their divorce on their son. “Every time we would switch [custody], it wasn’t just a drop-off. We’d go to the park and hang out or get lunch,” Duff explained. This approach, she felt, was crucial in creating a stable and reassuring environment for Luca. The couple aimed for a peaceful co-parenting dynamic, ensuring Luca felt safe and loved despite the changes in their family structure.
