Saood Variawa and François Cazalet delivered a hard‑earned triumph for Toyota Gazoo Racing at the 2026 Jordan Baja, clinching overall victory after a decisive 195.38 km final stage. Starting the day in fourth place, the South African‑French duo set the fastest time on the closing special by 4 min 26.7 sec and finished the rally 3 min 51.8 sec ahead of the competition, becoming the seventh different winner since the event’s inception in 2018. Their win propels Variawa into a strong position after two rounds of the 2026 FIA World Baja Cup.
“It was quite solid on our side. We caught Dania (Akeel) in the first 60 km and we carried on pushing to the end of the stage. The last bit was really tricky in the rocky sections but we did a good job. It was a demanding rally and we had a lot to learn. The terrain was a lot different to what I am used to but it ended up quite nicely,” Variawa said after crossing the finish line.
Podium finishers and key performances
The runner‑up slot went to Saudi Arabia’s Dania Akeel and French navigator Sébastien Delaunay, who posted the second‑quickest time on the final stage. “I am super happy with how it went,” Akeel remarked. “It really was a challenging and tough rally that had so many different types of terrain… The races in Jordan are on a high level and it makes you drive better. Sébastien did a great job with the navigation.”
Father‑daughter pair Lionel Baud and Lucie Baud claimed third place in their diesel‑powered X‑Raid Mini JCW Rally Plus after winning the opening stage. A flat tyre on the final day dropped them to the podium step, but they remain third in the FIA World Baja Cup standings. “We are very happy given that we won the first stage and finished in position three. We had a puncture so we lost a little time. Lucie did a perfect job with the navigation. When your daughter tells you to push, you are obliged to listen,” Baud explained.
Qatar’s veteran rally legend Nasser Saleh Al‑Attiyah and co‑driver Max Delfino, competing in an MD Sport Optimus Evo 5 buggy, battled for a second win but suffered a fuel‑pump failure that relegated them to fourth overall. “Disappointed. We had a problem with the fuel pump and we couldn’t really fix it. We know we lost the time but we had to finish the stage to get some good points,” Al‑Attiyah said.
Czech privateer Miroslav Zapletal and Polish navigator Michal Goleniewski** finished sixth in a Ford F‑150 Evo, securing second‑place points in the Ultimate category of the regional Baja Cup.
Event structure and competition highlights
The Jordan Baja featured a 12.78 km desert Prologue near the village of Rahmeh, north of Aqaba, which opened the ceremonial start at the Ayla resort. Al‑Attiyah topped the Prologue, edging Variawa by 36 seconds on a rocky, navigation‑heavy segment that saw several rivals lose time early on.
The start list comprised 32 crews across four classes: six entries each in the Ultimate and Challenger categories, five in Stock and 15 in SSV. Sixteen crews were registered for FIA World Baja Cup points, even as 15 entered the FIA Middle East Baja Cup.
Other notable performances included:
- Yasir Seaidan (KSA) and navigator Xavier Flick winning the Challenger category and finishing fifth adding valuable points in the Middle East Baja Cup.
- Hamed Al‑Wahaibi (OMA) claimed the opening stage win but incurred a 10‑minute penalty for not carrying a spare wheel, ultimately finishing seventh.
- Hedda Hosås (NOR) and Pol Tibau (ESP) recorded their first SSV victory in an R‑X Sport Can‑Am Maverick R, with Hosås noting, “We took it a bit careful in the beginning to save the podium and then pushed in the end. P1 is insane.”
- Mohammed Al‑Marri (QAT) and Szymon Gospodarczyk (POL) secured second in SSV, while Argentine‑born Fernando Alvarez (ARG) and French navigator Xavier Panseri rounded out the SSV podium, recalling, “We had problems with the power and the turbo system on both days. I am happy and as well a bit disappointed but we have to be positive.”
