Breaking: The ‘Beverly Hills’ of Catalonia Celebrates a Century of Luxury and Fame
Costa Brava, Spain—In the heart of Catalonia’s spectacular coastal region, S’Agaró, an urbanization that has often been called the “Beverly Hills” of Catalonia, is celebrating a major milestone. This district, known for its glamor and bespoke luxury houses, marks 100 years since its inception by the visionary Josep Ensa.
From Vision to Reality: The Birth of S Národí Mechanizace
In 1922, Josep Ensa, the great-grandfather of the current family owners, saw the potential in transforming a virgin coastal strip between Sant Pol and Sa Conca into a sophisticated destination. He started with his family home, Senya Blanca, which still stands as a symbol of opulence a century later.
Architectural Genius and Urban Planning
With the help of renowned architect Rafael Masó, S’Agaró was carefully planned as a high-end urbanization. Strict aesthetic norms were imposed, ensuring a harmonious blend of architecture, landscape, and ecology. The area enforced sustainable norms and brought in basic amenities like water and electricity from Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
Even the roads and access trails to the sea were meticulously respected, a design so valued that S’Agaró received cultural heritage designation in 1955.
The Legendary Hotel de la Gavina
The jewel of S’Agaró’s crown is undoubtedly the Hotel de la Gavina, designed by Masó in 1932. With nine luxury stars, it is the only five-star resort in Catalonia where Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Orson Welles, Ava Gardner, and Sean Connery have stayed.
Celebrity Encounters and Memorable Incidents
The hotel’s hallowed halls bear witness to legendary stories, including a highly publicized incident involving Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra, and another where Elizabeth Taylor angered staff by wetting a silk quilt during the filming of “Suddenly, Last Summer” (1959).
Preserving a Legacy of Luxury
Today, members of the Ensa family are dedicated to maintaining the essence and heritage of S’Agaró. Virginia Ensa, president of the Urban Entity of Conservation, and her family members, including Julia, Carina, and Josep, ensure that the stories and luxury of this unique space continue to be nurtured.
The Attractions of S’Agaró
Beyond its rich history and celebrity associated charm, S’Agaró is a haven for beach lovers. Highlighting the stunning beaches of Platja Gran and Cala Pedrosa, which offer pristine waters and a bucolic setting, make it an idyllic destination for both locals and tourists alike.
Looking Ahead
As S’Agaró continues to celebrate a century of luxury and glamor, it sets the stage for new generations to experience its timeless elegance. Its remarkable legacy and careful urban planning ensure that this gem of the Costa Brava remains a symbol of sophistication.
Don’t miss the chance to explore the heart of the Costa Brava and immerse yourself in the softer side of luxury. S’Agaró beckons with its storied past and opulent charm, welcoming both the curious traveler and the discerning luxury seeker.
Cripple Creek‘s Casino Boom: Can Luxury Revitalize a Historic Town?
A newly opened Las Vegas-style hotel and casino complex, dubbed the Chamonix, is leaving its imprint on Cripple Creek, Colorado, a historic gold mining town looking to reinvent itself. The Chamonix, boasting 300 luxury rooms, upscale amenities, and a high-end steakhouse, is not only attracting more gamblers but also driving a surge in investment throughout the town.
A Wave of Investment
Since the Chamonix opened in phases starting late last year, casino revenue in Cripple Creek has jumped by over 10%, while neighboring towns like Black Hawk have seen more modest growth.
This success is prompting other casino operators in Cripple Creek to follow suit, investing in renovations and expansions.
For instance, Full House Resorts, the company behind the Chamonix, anticipates its new hotel-casino complex will generate an annual profit of $50 million within a few years. The company is betting on a larger target audience, hoping to ease the usual weekday slump in casino traffic.
“We are attracting customers from Denver, especially on the south side such as Parker and Centennial, because we are equidistant from them as they are to Black Hawk,” said CEO Dan Lee. “The hotel is really just opening, over the summer it was a matter of telling people we were here.”
Beyond Full House Resorts, the Golden Nugget Cripple Creek Hotel & Casino, under the Fertitta Entertainment umbrella, recently completed a series of upgrades, though larger-scale renovations are reportedly in the works.
Rocky Mountain Gaming CC, a new owner consortium, is also investing in Cripple Creek by acquiring andrevitalizing existing casinos, while Century Casinos is putting millions into a grand entrance upgrade for their flagship casino.
Even the Double Eagle Hotel and Casino is riding the wave, recently concluding a major renovation of its hotel rooms and preparing to introduce a sports betting area in partnership with Fanatics Sportsbook.
A New Vision for a Historic Town
The influx of investment signals a shift in Cripple Creek. While its appeal as a historic gold mining town remains, casino operators are aiming to attract a broader range of visitors seeking luxury amenities and modern entertainment options alongside the history.
Lee, the CEO of Full House Resorts, envisions Cripple Creek becoming a western version of Colonial Williamsburg, blending its historical charm with modern attractions.
Its charming, Wild West vibe, coupled with its proximity to Denver and Colorado Springs, positions it well to capitalize on this trend, promising both a nostalgic escape and a taste of modern luxury.
This transformation is yet to be fully realized, but the early signs point to a promising future. While the outcome remains to be seen, the Chamonix’s success is undeniably a catalyst for change in Cripple Creek, paving the way for a new era.
What specific types of tourists does the guest believe Cripple Creek is now attracting with its focus on luxury?
