Breaking News: MPA Advocates for Robust Measures AgainstPiracy in the EU
Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros. stand united through the Motion Pictures Association (MPA) as they push for stricter anti-piracy measures in Europe. The latest move comes as a reaction to the European Commission’s new recommendation aimed at combating illegal streaming and IPTV services.
EU Recommends Swift Action Against Piracy
The specialized site TorrentFreak reports that the European Commission has published a targeted recommendation “On the fight against online piracy of sports content and other live events.” The recommendation prompts member states to take immediate action against unauthorized platforms. The MPA has enthusiastically embraced these measures.
MPA’s Critical Feedback on Implementation
Responding to the EU’s call for comments, the MPA reiterated that while measures exist, they are not uniformly implemented across Europe. According to the organization, Germany has not effectively implemented article 8 of the Infosoc law or article 11 of the IPRED directive. Poland and Bulgaria have not implemented them at all.
However, the MPA singled out Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Brazil for praise, noting the effectiveness of automated dynamic systems in place there. Eyebrows are raised on the technical flaws in these systems, which can occasionally interfere with legitimate services. The MPA recommends the involvement of additional players, ranging from reverse proxy suppliers to VPNs, to enhance blocking efforts.
The Impact on Piracy Ecosystems
These proactive measures, according to the MPA, will significantly disrupt the illegal streaming ecosystem. As platforms evolve to skirt blocking measures, the added complexity and involvement of multiple stakeholders will slow down the illegal operators’ ability to adapt.
Similar proposals are gaining traction across Europe. Noteworthy is the mounting pressure on Cloudflare and other service providers in regions like Spain, which are hotbeds for piracy.
Looking Ahead
The battle against piracy is far from over, but the MPA’s push signals a new era of aggressive action. By catering to legitimate consumer demands while clamping down on illicit streaming, Europe may well redefine the landscape for digital entertainment.
