Winona Ryder is joining the cast of Netflix’s hit series Wednesday for its third season, reuniting her with director Tim Burton and actress Jenna Ortega, Netflix confirmed Friday.
Ryder’s casting marks the latest addition to the expanding ensemble for the upcoming season, which began production in Dublin, Ireland. Eva Green was previously announced to play Aunt Ophelia, the long-lost sister of Morticia Addams. Noah Taylor, Oscar Morgan, Kennedy Moyer, Chris Sarandon, Joanna Lumley, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Victor Dorobantu, Evie Templeton, Luis Guzmán, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Fred Armisen are similarly set to return.
The casting reunites Ryder and Burton, who previously collaborated on iconic films such as Beetlejuice (1988) and Edward Scissorhands (1990). Ryder also recently appeared alongside Ortega in the 2024 sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, where Ortega played Lydia Deetz’s daughter.
“I’m so happy that Winona has joined, she fits perfectly into this world,” Burton said in a statement. “And she’s a close friend. I always perceive lucky to work with her.”
Showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar echoed Burton’s sentiment, stating, “When it comes to outcasts, Winona Ryder is the best. Her relationship with Tim Burton has defined some of the most unforgettable characters in cinema. We loved collaborating with her on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and couldn’t be more excited to welcome her to Nevermore.”
Details regarding Ryder’s character remain undisclosed. The third season of Wednesday is currently in production, following the success of its first two seasons. The first season became Netflix’s most-watched English-language series of all time, and the second season, released in two parts in August and September of last year, quickly became the fifth most-watched English-language series on the platform.
Ryder recently concluded her role in the popular series Stranger Things, where she portrayed Joyce Byers. She has received two Academy Award nominations for her performances in The Age of Innocence (1993) and Little Women (1994).
