Rohnert Park, CA – Jiaoying Summers, the Chinese American comedian whose spontaneous crowd work has captivated millions online, is bringing her “Lucky Pony 26” tour to the Graton Resort & Casino on March 20. The performance marks her first appearance in the North Bay and follows a recent 27-show run across Asia and Australia, all of which sold out, according to Live Nation.
Summers’ rise to prominence has been fueled by short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where clips of her quick-witted interactions with audience members regularly go viral. With over four million followers across those platforms, she’s built a dedicated fanbase drawn to her relatable humor and ability to turn everyday moments into comedic gold. Her unique style, blending personal anecdotes with improvisational brilliance, has resonated with a global audience.
“I’m open to talk about anything,” Summers said in an interview with The Press Democrat. “When I perform live, I can go further. If you’re in the audience, you’re part of the show.” She’s known for engaging with couples in the front rows, playfully probing their relationship stories – moments that often become the exceptionally clips shared widely online. “I love a love story,” she added.
Beyond her stand-up, Summers is a multi-faceted creative force. She’s already achieved milestones like headlining and selling out the historic Apollo Theater, becoming the first Chinese comedian to do so. Her first comedy special, What Specie Are You?, premiered on Hulu in November, and a second hourlong special is slated for release in April. She also serves as CEO of the Summer’s Group, a company focused on digital content, live comedy shows, and promoting Asian American artists.
From China to the Comedy Stage
Born in China, Jiaoying Summers, 36, immigrated to the United States in 2009. She is a mother of two children from a previous marriage, and her stage surname, Summers, is the English translation of her ex-husband’s Chinese last name. Despite her fluency in English, she notes that her comedic process is often shaped by her native language. “I think in Chinese, so I have to translate for myself,” she explained to The Press Democrat. “And you have to be fast.”
Summers’ comedy isn’t afraid to tackle complex topics. She doesn’t shy away from politics, but emphasizes her goal is to connect with audiences, not divide them. “I’ll talk about politics,” she said. “I advise them what I think, but I don’t tell them what to think. I aim for to humanize other people.” She believes in the power of shared experiences and finding common ground, stating, “I really feel we’re all one race — the human race.”
Expanding Her Creative Horizons
Currently seven months pregnant, Summers recently rebranded her podcast from “Tiger Mom” to “Tiger Mommy,” reflecting a desire for a warmer and more nurturing tone. She is also actively developing a memoir and a television comedy series, envisioning herself as the owner of a comedy club – a role she already embodies in her real life. “The book is mostly about me trying to survive as a single mother,” she shared.
Summers maintains a monthly residency at the Tuscany Suites & Casino in Las Vegas and anticipates a comfortable atmosphere at the Graton Resort & Casino. “I’ve played a lot of casinos,” she said. “I like it due to the fact that I can do longer sets and spend more time with the audience.”
