Breaking: Refik Anadol’s AI Artwork Recreates Messi’s Iconic Goal for Charity
In a groundbreaking fusion of art and technology, Turkish artist Refik Anadol has used artificial intelligence to immortalize Lionel Messi’s legendary header against Manchester United in the 2009 Champions League final. The immersive and multisensory experience, titled “Living Memory: Messi – A Goal in Life,” is set to be auctioned, with all proceeds going to beneficial organizations.
An Immersive Journey into Football History
After Messi himself chose this header as the most beautiful goal of his career, Anadol’s AI-driven project transforms it into an eight-minute, 16K-resolution masterpiece. This digital art can be viewed for free at the Rockefeller Center in New York from July 12 to 22. The piece will then be auctioned off through Christie’s, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Inter Miami CF Foundation, which collaborates with UNICEF.
The Technology Behind the Art
Anadol’s innovative approach involved using an open-source movement monitoring system to map 17 points on Messi’s body, reconstructing his physical shape and expressions. Additionally, biometric data such as voice, breathing rhythm, heartbeat, and emotional nuances extracted from interviews were integrated into the artwork. This pioneering method creates a unique and immersive experience that captures the depth of that fleeting moment.
Messi’s Personal Touch
Messi expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This project means a lot to me, not only because it remembers a special moment in my career, but also because it can contribute to improving the lives of those who really need it.” Anadol added, “We have taken millions of data—images, sounds, and physiological signals—from one of the most iconic moments in football and turned them into a pioneering artistic experience.”
