New Delhi ∙ India ranks 132 out of 191 countries on the Human Development Index (HDI) of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) (131 out of 189 countries in the 2020 report). India’s HDI value is 0.633 (0.645 in 2020). The main reason was the decline in average life expectancy. It decreased from 69.7 to 67.2.
Human development is measured by a nation’s health, education and average income. In the grip of the Covid pandemic, human development has slowed globally in 2020 and 21. For the first time in 32 years, global human development has slowed. Global life expectancy fell to 71.4 years from 72.8 in 2019. Instability and anxiety are evident in all areas. Bangladesh and Bhutan have made significant progress in South Asia.
From renewable energy to pandemic preparedness, the report recommends policies that ensure significant investment, social security insurance, and technological, economic, and cultural innovation. According to the report, India has lifted 27.1 crore people out of poverty in the last decade.
