AT LEAST 17 religious pilgrims were killed and 41 injured in an accident as they traveled to a pilgrimage site in southwestern Pakistan, officials said Thursday.
The accident occurred at around 10pm (1700 GMT) on Wednesday evening in the Hub district of Balochistan province, deputy district commissioner Munir Ahmed told AFP, confirming the number of dead and injured.
“The truck was traveling at high speed and spun out of control of the driver as it rounded a curve” and fell into a ravine as they approached the shrine, he said.
Shaukat Jalbani, deputy principal medical superintendent of Hub’s main hospital, also confirmed 17 people had died and said most of the injured had been sent to the nearby city of Karachi for treatment.
Road accidents with high fatalities are common in Pakistan where safety measures are lacking, driver training is poor and transport infrastructure is often outdated.
In January 2023, 41 people died when their passenger bus, also filled with flammable oil containers, fell into a ravine in Balochistan province and caught fire. (AFP/Z-3)
