Violent Weather Shift in Cologne: Thunderstorms and Hurricane-like Gusts Threaten
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Germany is bracing for a dramatic weather shift that could bring severe thunderstorms, hurricane-like gusts, and up to 40 liters of rain per square meter in Cologne and surrounding regions, according to the latest predictions from the German Weather Service (DWD).
After experiencing a record heatwave with temperatures soaring above 35 degrees Celsius early in the week, residents can expect a rapid drop to temperatures between 22 and 26 degrees from Wednesday evening onwards.
Severe Storms Threaten Cologne
The DWD has issued warnings for significant thunderstorms that are expected to hit the area from the afternoon, bringing powerful showers and torrential rain. Weather models suggest varying predictions: some modelos project up to 40 liters of rain per square meter, while others indicate the storm may move through North Rhine-Westphalia’s northern regions.
In Cologne, most weather models predict between zero to seven liters of rain by Wednesday evening. However, since this rainfall is anticipated to occur within a few hours, it could still result in very strong showers.
The reliable Swiss weather model Super HD predicts heavy rain amounts of up to 40 liters per square meter in the Bergisches Land region, potentially leading to flash flooding.
Mobile Weather Warnings for Tuesday and Wednesday
Weather warnings for parts of North Rhine-Westphalia are already in effect. The DWD expects a thunderstorm line to form from the northwest in the evening, with heavy rainfall of 30 to 40 liters per square meter and possibly up to 90 liters per square meter in certain areas.
This storm front from the west will bring rain until early Thursday morning, after which drier conditions are expected. Temperatures will plummet, making Thursday feel significantly cooler.
Future Weather Outlook
The next week is expected to remain mild, with no temperatures higher than 30 degrees. Additional storms are forecast for the weekend, with up to 35 liters of rain per square meter possible in Cologne from Sunday to Tuesday.
Historically, extreme weather events like these have been on the rise due to climate change, making weather predictions increasingly critical for safety and planning. Residents are advised to stay updated and follow local authorities’ guidance.
