The night of January 28th brought chaos to Kharkiv as an explosion rocked the city, sparking a large-scale fire in the Novobavar district. Mayor Igor Terekhov was quick to announce the incident, stating thru Telegram,”There is an arrival in the city.Pre-site – Kholodnogorsk district. Fire on the site. Details are specified.”
Later, Terekhov provided further details, confirming the destruction.“According to the updated information, the blow fell on the territory of a civilian enterprise in the Novobavar district. A large-scale fire was on the site of the hit. All relevant services are working,” he shared.
The State Emergency Service promptly elaborated on the extent of the blaze. Head of the service, Bogdan Smooth, revealed the harrowing details: “A fire with an area of about 1,500 sq. m broke out in Kharkiv after the Russian drone hit on the night of January 28. The fire covered production facilities in the Novobavar district.”
Smooth explained that a Shakud-type enemy drone targeted a civilian woodworking enterprise, resulting in a damaged gas pipeline crucial to the factoryS operations. This damage led to a massive fire, requiring over 12 fire units and equipment from the Kharkiv city Council to contain it. The fire consumed the entire two-story building, leaving neighboring enterprises and at least two parked vehicles damaged in its wake.
Though thankfully no employees were present during the attack, Smooth confirmed, “There is information about two victims, they have an acute reaction to stress. But these are not employees of the enterprise, there was no one here during the hit. These are residents of the surrounding territories.”
As of 03:30, rescue efforts were still underway to extinguish the inferno. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat to civilian infrastructure and the human cost of the conflict in Kharkiv.

At
Archyde, we spoke to Olena Petrov, a representative from the kharkiv City Council, to get a clearer picture of the incident and its impact.
Archyde:
Ms. Petrov, can you tell us more about the impact of this drone strike on the Novobavar district?
Olena Petrov: Thank you for having me. This attack was notably devastating as it targeted a civilian woodworking factory, which was fortunately unoccupied at the time. The explosion caused a large-scale fire that engulfed the entire two-story building, spreading to nearby enterprises and damaging vehicles. Thankfully, no workers were injured.
Archyde: The reports mention that the factory’s gas pipeline was damaged, leading to the massive fire. Can you elaborate on the extent of the damage to the infrastructure?
Olena petrov: That’s correct. The damage to the gas pipeline was critical, creating a fatal fuel source for the fire. This incident underscores the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure and the potential for disastrous consequences when targeted by enemy attacks.
Archyde: Two people have been reported with stress-related symptoms. Can you tell us more about their condition and why they were affected?
Olena Petrov: These were residents living near the affected factory. While they weren’t directly involved in the incident, the shock and proximity of the explosion understandably caused significant distress. The mental health impact of such events on civilians living in conflict zones is a serious concern.
Archyde: What message do you have for the residents of Kharkiv following this attack?
Olena Petrov: Kharkiv remains a resilient city. Despite these ongoing challenges, we must continue to stand united and support one another. The city Council is committed to providing assistance to those affected by this attack and working tirelessly to rebuild our city. We need to stay hopeful and work together to bring an end to this violence and ensure the safety of all civilians.
