Breaking News: ECDC Reports Slight Increase in COVID-19 Circulation in Europe
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported this Friday, June 13, a slight increase in the circulation of COVID-19 in Europe. Although the virus remains at low levels, no increase in hospitalizations, ICU admissions, or deaths has been detected, according to the latest report from the agency.
Five Variants Still Active in Europe
Currently, the ECDC monitors five variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that are circulating in countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA). Among them, the BA.1.8.1 variant, recently classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “variant under monitoring,” has shown a significant increase in global prevalence, particularly in the Western Pacific.
The European agency clarifies that this new variant does not represent a higher risk to public health compared to other Omicron variants. Additionally, current vaccines continue to offer protection against severe forms of the disease, including those caused by BA.1.8.1.
Insufficient Vaccination in Older Adults
A point of concern indicated by the ECDC is the low vaccination coverage against COVID-19 in older adults. Only one country in the region exceeds 80% coverage among people over 80, while only seven exceed 50%.
This situation increases the vulnerability of people with the greatest risk of developing serious illness, especially after a winter with low virus circulation, which could have reduced population immunity.
Recommendations: COVID-19 Prevention and Monitoring
Although primary care rates due to respiratory conditions remain similar or lower than those of previous years, the ECDC has recommended intensifying surveillance of respiratory viruses throughout the year, not just during the winter season.
In case the cases increase, the agency recalls the following basic recommendations:
- Stay at home if respiratory symptoms occur.
- Maintain good hand and respiratory hygiene.
- Properly ventilate closed spaces.
- Use masks in closed public spaces, especially among vulnerable people, caregivers, and nearby contacts.
Additionally, the ECDC proposes that national authorities consider the application of an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine according to the epidemiological situation and the time elapsed since the last dose.
Global Disease Surveillance
From the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the ECDC and other international organizations such as the WHO have established surveillance systems for variants and activity reports of the virus. Although the impact of SARS-CoV-2 has decreased significantly, continuous surveillance is maintained to detect changes in virus behavior that can alter its transmissibility, severity, or response to vaccines.
The ECDC has underlined the importance of not relaxing prevention strategies, especially before new variants. Although the general risk remains low, the combination of reduced immunity and low vaccination in older people could cause a more pronounced increase in incidence in the coming weeks.
COVID-19 Rebound
Despite the rebound detected, no serious impacts on European health systems have been reported. Authorities insist that the key to avoiding serious complications remains vaccination, constant monitoring, and basic hygiene measures.
The ECDC message is clear: the virus is still present, and prevention must continue to be a priority, especially in vulnerable groups.
