The government could not present the 26th constitutional amendment for approval in the Senate session even today. The meeting will resume tomorrow at 11 am.
Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani presided over the Senate meeting in which the twenty-sixth constitutional amendments were to be submitted for approval by the government.
During the session, a resolution was brought to adjourn the question period which was approved. At one point, Chairman St. Yusuf Raza Gilani proposed to adjourn the meeting for one hour, which was supported by Senator Irfan Siddiqui.
Yusuf Raza Gilani said that a meeting is being held and there is also a cabinet meeting. If deemed appropriate, the meeting should be adjourned for up to one hour, however, the meeting was continued and the Deputy Chairman Senate continued to conduct the proceedings of the meeting.
Despite the meeting held last weekend, the Sacred Union of the Nation will, this Monday, August 12, in disarray, go to the election of the members of the definitive bureau of the Senate.
The choice of Honorary Prime Minister, Sama Lukonde, to chair this office is not unanimous within the political family of the Head of State.
The consequence is that the Senate seat is contested by three candidates from the Sacred Union of the Nation.
Sama Lukonde faces Afani Idrissa Mangala, former interim governor of Maniema and Jonas Mukamba Kadiata Nzemba, all members of the USN.
For the post of first vice-president, José Kalala of the UDPS is the only candidate after the withdrawal of Christophe Lutundula, while Modeste Bahati Lukwebo is fighting for the 2nd vice-presidency with Corneille Isenge and Eustache Muhanzi (close to Vital Kamerhe).
Jean Bamanisa Saidi gave up his place to Françoise Bemba as Senate rapporteur while the other USN candidates are not giving up, namely: Justin Kalumba, Ivan Kazadi and Nefertiti Ngudianza.
For the position of deputy rapporteur which goes to the Opposition, Salomon Idi Kalonda must face Jean-Claude Baende.
While at the quaestorship, the Sacred Union retains the candidacy of Taupin Kabongo while Carole Agito, Moise Ekumbo and Sylvain Mukengeshai have not renounced their candidacies.
Furthermore, Isabelle Kabamba and Pascal Omanlwama are competing for the post of deputy quaestor.
The battle promises to be tough between the candidates from the political family of the head of state for the various posts in the permanent office of the Senate.
