Iranian Cinema Takes Center Stage at Shanghai International Film Festival
Tehran – Three Iranian films are set to compete in the 27th shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), a prestigious event held in China from June 13 to 22. This selection highlights the growing recognition of Iranian cinema on the global stage.
Iranian Films Selected For Competition
the selected films include “A Part Of The Land,” directed by Nima Mahdian Asl, “Dead In The Water” by Leila Hekmatnia, and “The Daughter” by Pourya Kakavand.These films will be showcased at the SIFF, offering a diverse portrayal of iranian storytelling and filmmaking talent.
“A Part Of The Land” will compete in the documentary category, alongside films from Mexico, China, Spain, and Laos. this documentary, produced by the Documentary, experimental and Animation Film Center (DEFC), tells the life story of a woman. It previously received a special award at the 18th Iran International Documentary Film Festival, Cinema Verite 2024, and director Mahdian won the Crystal simorgh Award for Best Documentary Directing at the 43rd Fajr International film Festival in 2025.
“Dead In The Water,” a live-action short film, will compete against films from China, France, Portugal, Peru, spain, and Mexico. Hekmatnia’s drama addresses pressing social issues, focusing on a woman in a drought-stricken village who hires undocumented workers to dig a well, only to face unexpected financial and ethical dilemmas.
Kakavand’s “The Daughter” will participate in the Asian New Talent competition section, which spotlights emerging filmmakers. it will compete with films from China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines for the top award.
