What inspired you to start Re-educated Comedy?

Lewis Liu: I realized there was a gap in the L.A. comedy scene. A couple of my clients, who are Chinese-speaking film and television professionals, expressed a desire to do comedy in their native language but struggled to find opportunities.

The Frist Show: A sold-Out success

How did the first Re-educated Comedy show go?

Lewis Liu: It was a resounding success! The 140-seat comedy club sold out. We had a great mix of people who came for the food and those who were genuinely interested in chinese stand-up comedy.

How do the open mic nights help comedians develop their material?

Lewis Liu: Our open mics provide a safe and supportive space for comedians to test out new material. After our first show, some of our comedians told me they were running out of material, so we introduced free open mics to address that need.

What inspired the name ‘Re-educated Comedy’?

Lewis Liu: When you come to a new country, you learn about new things and essentially get ‘reeducated.’ We wanted a name that reflects that cultural exchange process and invites interpretation.
