Vienna, Austria – Austrian public prosecutors have filed terrorism-related charges against a 21-year-old man accused of plotting an attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna in August 2024. The charges, filed Monday, allege the suspect declared allegiance to the Islamic State group by disseminating propaganda material and videos through various messaging platforms.
Prosecutors contend the defendant obtained instructions online for constructing a shrapnel bomb utilizing triacetone triperoxide, a substance commonly employed by IS, and subsequently produced a little quantity of the explosive. Authorities also allege he made “several attempts” to illegally purchase weapons outside of Austria and smuggle them into the country, according to statements released by the Vienna public prosecutor’s office.
The suspect, identified by Austrian media as Beran A., was initially arrested in August 2024, prompting Austrian authorities to cancel three scheduled Taylor Swift performances. At the time of the arrest, authorities indicated they had disrupted a credible threat targeting the concerts.
The United States played a role in averting the potential attack, sharing intelligence with Austrian partners that enabled the disruption of the plot, as confirmed by then-White House national security spokesman John Kirby in August 2024. “The United States has an enduring focus on our counterterrorism mission. We work closely with partners all over the world to monitor and disrupt threats,” Kirby stated.
Prosecutors plan to pursue a criminal case against the suspect in Wiener Neustadt, a town situated near the Austrian capital. A spokesperson for the Vienna public prosecutor’s office confirmed to the Associated Press that the defendant remains in custody.
This case is not isolated. Related investigations have revealed a network of individuals potentially involved in the plot. A German court previously convicted a Syrian national, Mohammad A., in connection with the scheme, sentencing him to a suspended 18-month sentence for preparing a serious act of violence and supporting a terrorist act abroad.
