The Dynamic Duo: Gian Piero Díaz and Gino Tassara – Partners in Communicative Action and Creative Ventures
2023-10-20 14:40:17
They are friends, cousins, accomplices, confidants and partners in Communicative Action. Gian Piero Díaz is the most creative of the duo. Gino Tassara, the most grounded, practical and realistic. They have 17 projects in mind, four in process and two in execution. This week they revived “Lovers”, the successful interactive sitcom and stand-up comedy that broke the box office in the United States. And among the stories that will be brought to the big screen in 2024, the films “Leslie, the rebel angel” and “Pisco 7.9” stand out. The first inspired by the life of actress Leslie Stewart, and the second by one of the most destructive earthquakes that occurred in Peru.
“More than a duo, we are a team. We have 47 people working in the company, each one with a dream and a specific function. There are no marriages here. The only one is Piero’s with Borka (the actor’s wife) (laughs). So, if there is no marriage, there will never be divorce,” explains Tassara Piérola. “We are the Piérolas in action,” adds Díaz.
“They always told me that I was a work machine, but everything changed since Piero joined. My day started at 7:30 am, now it starts at 5:30 am. And we finished at midnight,” details the journalist.
Interactive comedy
Last Tuesday, “Lovers” premiered, a fusion of situation comedy and stand-up, in which 4 actors show the situations that couples experience from the beginning of a romantic relationship to the end. Gian Piero Díaz, Rossana Fernández-Maldonado, Alexandra Graña and Gonzalo Revoredo star in this hilarious story directed by Gino Tassara, which runs until November 22 at the Teatro NOS in San Isidro.
“I helped write this play in the United States. It is in English and one of the characters, the one played by Gian Piero, in the American version is the Latino who spoke English badly. The work worked very well there. Later, it was sold to Argentina and Colombia. When I found out that it was already growing, I asked if they would allow me to do it in Peru. They gave us the rights, and here we are,” Gino details.
“I am returning to acting following 10 years. It’s what I needed to get hooked on acting once more, which is what I like and am passionate regarding. I particularly love this work. The public, in addition to having fun, creates catharsis. We all identify with the first kiss, with the broken ones, with the toxic couples. We also play with the public. And each actor plays like 10 or 14 characters. And at some point in the work we are ourselves. We break that wall to talk with the public,” says Gian Piero.

Since when do you work together?
Gian Piero: The idea arose before the pandemic, but it was last year that we began to complement each other in some way with Acción Comunicativa and Sin Argollas.
Gino: Since Acción Comunicativa was formed, seven years ago, our idea has always been to do things with purpose, whether in film or television. It is having a goal of help. We are grateful for the luck we have, therefore we have to give something back.
─Who chooses the content?
Gian Piero: Both. If he questions me regarding something, I have to argue to be able to move forward. He is more grounded. Regarding content, we have never had many differences.
Gino: Everything Gian Piero does adds up. Leslie Stewart’s film was going to be called “Lima, night.” He recommended changing it to “Leslie, the Rebel Angel.” That’s why in the trailer you hear the song from “Caligula”, “Children” by EMF.
Gian Piero: “Lima, night” sounded like a disco magazine to me.
Gino: Before the pandemic we were going to make the movie “Divorciadas”, but we had to postpone it, and when we resumed the project another movie came out with the same name. Then, Piero proposed changing the name to “Friend, realize.” He is never still, he is the Tasmanian Devil.
Gian Piero: The idea is to grow together, although it is not a good time because at the end of the year everyone adjusts to arrive in green. This year in particular there have been some very jolly moments…..
─What has been the most difficult moment?
Gino: When “Queens Without a Crown” didn’t do well. She had many things once morest us. It was very strong. The day of the premiere was Cyclone Yaku. The shopping centers closed. According to reports passed to us, more than 51 thousand tickets were returned. We didn’t do well at the box office.
Gian Piero The problem was not an economic issue because we have a zero debt policy. We are not waiting for the box office to be able to pay people. What hurt us most was that the film’s powerful message, regarding violence once morest women, did not arrive at the right time or have the reach we expected. Fortunately, very soon, it will be seen on América TV.
Gino: We even had an approach in Mexico so that it might be seen there because Daniela Romo was part of the cast. They sent us the contract, but when they removed the Mexican ambassador in Peru, they denied us access.
Gian Piero: That film took a lot of hits. That first stage of the year, Gino wanted to leave everything, he didn’t want anything anymore.
Gino: Gian Piero, he told me that we were sowing. And I wanted to harvest. With “Utopia” we also had a strong blow. It was my first film in Peru. They started eating me everywhere. I learned what movie vultures were. Sunat took the money with everything collected because the accountant had not digitized the payments. Happily, following seven months of paperwork, they returned our money. My girlfriend and Jorge Vilela, our director of “Utopia” also passed away. Here comes the positive part of Gian Piero. He lifted me up. He told me that we had to continue.
─How was “Possible” born?
Gino: That desire to create content that helps. Willax is a channel where you have to build an audience with patience and good humor. Saturdays at 3:00 pm is not an easy schedule. One despairs of having greater scope, but in this case it is more of a qualitative issue than a quantitative one.
Gian Piero: Having Carlos Neuhaus as part of the jury definitely gives you a lot of confidence. Knowing that you are presenting a project in front of someone who knows a lot regarding the subject, who has the moral and professional authority to give an opinion, is what we were looking for.
─ Breaking away from Renzo left you free to start this duo with Gino.
No, because there was never exclusivity. Each one had their own themes. We didn’t work on all the projects together. I always wanted to exploit my marketing and creative side. I had him asleep, and now I can do it with Gino. He always had other programs outside of the duo he did with Renzo. When we did “Combat”, at the same time I had “Hello everyone”. I also had “Dream Factory”. The relationship with Renzo stayed there, but my work routine didn’t change much.
─Would you host another television program with Renzo or on any other platform?
I have always said that time is the only thing that can tell us what is going to happen. Today I have no relationship nor do I speak with him, but that does not mean that tomorrow life will bring us together once more. I will never close that possibility.
─Was there a pending conversation between you?
I think so. And I think that at some point it will happen.
EC | Gian Piero Díaz: Would he work with Renzo once more? Do you have a pending conversation?
─According to Johanna San Miguel, Renzo got upset with you because you didn’t tell him that you were going to join “This is war.” That’s true?
La Chata said that Peter Fajardo was to blame for everything, but he said it for scrubbing. It isn’t true.
─What was the reason?
I’m not going to tell you that.
─Is it true that they called you to drive “You are in all of them”?
They didn’t call me, it’s not possible because it is very complicated at the production level. They are very jealous.
─Why did you distance yourself from “This is war”?
I will always be very grateful for “Combat” and “This is war” because it is part of my history. I love ATV and ProTV, but I decided to go to Willax because everything has a limit. I did live reality shows for ten years. It is exhausting. I also felt that I was missing out on many things with my family, my children. Today I have the peace of being able to choose, to build a team, to have the production company with which I feel comfortable. The work environment is fun. I’m reaping what I sowed.
─For the seven years of Acción Comunicativa and Sinargollas they will present a series of projects. What is it regarding?
We are going to present the films “Leslie, a rebel angel” and “Pisco 7.9”. Also the one we are going to record soon, “Friend, Realize.” In addition to digital programs, such as “Agricooltores”, “Plan H” with Junior Silva, “Disparejos” and “Qué hay de jama”, a cooking program that Gian Piero will host. We are also preparing a pilot for another television program and two series: “Cortinas de humo” and “Alverso”. Finally, a fashion show with Marissa Minetti. Everything for next year.

Rebel angel
─How did the film regarding Leslie come regarding?
In 2016, Leslie approached me, because we have known each other since we were children, to tell me that she wanted to write a book that was going to be called “Caligulamente, Leslie”. After reading a few pages, I told her that her book was many volumes long. Because, if we talk regarding 90s rebellion, it’s her. She was a force to be reckoned with. She was shot, she has three children, her husband was in prison, she was a sexymbol and an Impact Girl. She was a fashionable actress and the first to appear naked in a magazine. She has a lot to tell.
─Who will play Leslie?
Ariana Rifai Stewart, his daughter. And we hope that Leslie will also appear at some point in the story.
─How do you define this stage of your lives?
Gian Piero: It is time to sow. We are building something very straw and we are failing (laughs).
Gino: It’s also time to harvest.

Ranking High in Google Searches: Vagues at Théâtre Joliette – A Unique Ephemeral Performance with Ice Puppets
2023-10-06 05:00:00
At the Théâtre Joliette, the director and her puppeteers perform Vagues, adapted from the English novel, in a very ephemeral version.
Their translucent bodies stand out from the darkness of the Théâtre Joliette, revealing their fragility. The protagonists of Wavesa creation presented Tuesday in Marseille, are ice puppets, an ephemeral material allowing “cross time», like Virginia Woolf’s characters. Between these, which the British writer’s novel follows “from early childhood to very old age» and their frosted, human-sized effigies, «there was some sort of correspondence“, as “An evidence», Explains to AFP the director and visual artist Elise Vigneron, who has been working with ice for around ten years.
«It’s really a fascinating material because it is completely ephemeral, she continues, and at the same time, there is this possibility of crossing history or freezing”, like this ice cream “fossil» which was formed several thousand years ago in Antarctica and the study of which allows scientists to better understand past changes in the climate.
Extracted one by one from a large refrigerator-display placed at the back of the stage, Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Jinny and Louis advance towards us, suspended by their wires from high rails and delicately guided by the five performers of the show, including an actor and a dancer. “I was very apprehensive regarding working with ice», confides Thomas Cordeiro, 31, a trained puppeteer who is confronting this material for the first time. “Manipulation is really in the present“, he explains, because the disadvantage of ice, “it’s going to break» and from then on, “it’s no longer the same weights» at the end of the wires therefore «it’s up to us to rebalance ourselves».
“Faced with this material, the viewer immediately identifies, there is a kind of empathy, something very sensitive which does not need words,” believes Elise Vigneron. NICOLAS TUCAT / AFP
It is a materialin movement, in transformation» without necessarily controlling these changes, notes Elise Vigneron. “It’s really a technical and artistic challenge» for the team, which must adapt and “accept that there is randomness», Adds the 43-year-old director, whose new creation takes place in a cycle on ice started in 2020.
A challenge that begins the day before each performance, by filling with water the various resin and silicone molds which will give shape – with 12 to 15 hours of freezing – to the limbs of the puppets, before they are assembled thanks to a stainless steel skeleton trapped in ice. “We make ice which is hollow so we have to have a fairly precise time to be able to empty the water which is in the molds. If it is too full, it will not melt enough and will be too heavy for handlers. And at the same time, if it is too thin, it breaks too quickly», explains Elise Vigneron.
By extracting Bernard’s head from its silicone matrix, Vincent Debuire ensures that the child’s face has been sufficiently sculpted. “The difficulty with ice is that we lose the lines quite easily», specifies the young man, one of the builders responsible for making the puppets. Hence the use of talcum powder to “hang» and emphasize the contours of the face. “Faced with this material, the viewer immediately identifies, there is a kind of empathy, something very sensitive which does not need words», Estimates Elise Vigneron.
However, “it is an ephemeral which is not morbid” more “cyclic“, like water, “very organic material» et «alive», which is like a metaphor for our own existence, according to the visual artist. The passage of time is also perceptible in the “different qualities of ice cream» which run through the show: «very very white at the start“, the puppets will little by little become “more and more transparent“, she notes. Eventually, “these individuals who are quite separated throughout the show”, melting, go “unify in the matter that is on the ground», taking its place once more in the great whole.

#Why aren’t there 10 million movies coming out? #If this continues, it will become a Hong Kong movie. #Grassroots investment is required #How to distinguish between K-drama and Korean Wave dramas[경향시소]
2023-10-05 10:20:00
K-movies, K-dramas, and K-POP, which are now familiar to the world, have grown by overcoming internal and external crises with ‘venture spirit’. They quickly responded to technological changes such as OTT and YouTube, expanding their reach to the world. However, following COVID-19, the number of theater audiences has decreased significantly. There is also a sense of crisis that the strengthening market dominance of the giant OTT called Netflix might lead to a contraction of the content production industry.
The Kyunghyang Shinmun’s YouTube channel ‘This Kyunghyang’ news commentary content ‘Kyunghyang Seesaw (Current Affairs Sommelier)’ features books. <한류 외전>We gathered with Dr. Yunji Kim of the Export-Import Bank of Korea’s Overseas Economic Research Institute, who wrote, to hear regarding the crisis in the K-culture industry and the prospects for overcoming it.
Recent Korean dramas can be divided into ‘K-drama’ and ‘Korean Wave drama’. <오징어 게임>Series with a strong social nature, mainly consumed in North America and Europe, have earned the title K-drama. However, in the Asian market, romantic comedy-oriented dramas are still popular. This is called ‘Korean Wave drama’.
While dramas are still popular in the global market, the Korean theater industry and movies are showing signs of crisis. Dr. Yunji Kim explains, “Romantic comedies that were seen in theaters in the 1990s have now disappeared from theaters,” adding, “Just as Hollywood reorganized the theater industry with Marvel-type visual effects-focused movies, there is a possibility that Korean movies will also be differentiated.” .
Will the 10 million movies that were once released twice a year ever come out once more? Dr. Kim said, “If you look at the 10 million movies so far, they were works that well captured the concerns and interests of the public at the time.” He added, “The recent 10 million movies <극한직업>Even if you look at it, it is a work that clearly shows the sense of self-employment.”
To achieve this, the attitude of capital invested in content is important. Rather than investing in simply following the formula of previous successful works, active investment in new attempts should be made.
Dr. Kim also warns once morest dependence on giant OTTs, such as Netflix, for capital investment in content. Relying on exclusive OTT might easily lead to a crisis in the industry itself. Hong Kong cinema, which had grown significantly from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, declined as investors left following the return to China. If Netflix’s capital leaves for a more ‘efficient market’, it may follow the same path.
Dr. Kim says, “In addition to growing domestic OTT, there may also be a need for changes in the way we invest in content aired on OTT.”
More details can be found through Kyunghyang Seesaw. Kyunghyang Seesaw (Current Affairs Sommelier) is Kyunghyang Shinmun’s YouTube content that selects the right news every week and provides detailed analysis and outlook.
