**Host:** So, let’s dive right in. “The Cursed ladies” explores the lives of Czech first ladies, individuals often relegated to the background of history. What inspired you to tell their stories?



**Tomáš:** Well, I’ve always been fascinated by the unseen forces shaping history. Governments rise and fall, ideologies clash, but behind those grand narratives are individual lives, frequently enough of women, quietly navigating complex personal realities. I felt these women – EdvardBeneš’s wife Hana, Klement Gottwald’s Marta, Gustáv Husák’s Viera, and Václav Havel’s Olga – deserved to have their voices heard.



**host:** The play employs a striking visual metaphor: covering and uncovering the lips of the first ladies in portraits. Can you elaborate on that symbolism and its importance



**Tomáš:** Absolutely. It symbolizes the silencing of these women’s voices throughout history. Their stories have been overshadowed, their experiences minimized. The covering signifies that silencing, the gradual uncovering a reclaiming of their narratives.

**Tomáš:** Of course. Political life demands tremendous sacrifices, and those sacrifices frequently enough fall heaviest on the shoulders of those closest to those in power. These women often had to put their own aspirations aside, conform to societal expectations, and endure constant scrutiny.
