The Making Of ‘Who Is The Sky?’
David Byrne began writing the songs for Who Is The Sky? after his acclaimed American Utopia project, which included a Broadway run and a Spike Lee-directed HBO special. Byrne explains that he likes to keep a “stockpile” of song ideas ready. These rudimentary songs started with just him, an acoustic guitar, and a programmed loop or beat.
The album features guest appearances from Paramore’s Hayley Williams,St. vincent, The Smile and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, and american Utopia percussionist Mauro Refosco, adding diverse layers to the record.
Creative Collaboration and Musical Direction
Byrne aimed for intimate orchestral arrangements to enhance the emotion in his new songs, while also maintaining accessibility. He enlisted Kid Harpoon to help achieve this balance. “Every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure,” Byrne stated, emphasizing the collaborative spirit of the project.
The led single, “Everybody Laughs,” is a bouncy, string-backed art-pop track that showcases Byrne’s life-affirming and summery side, complete with a marimba solo.
