The rising popularity of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro has brought new hope to individuals struggling with weight management. However, experts emphasize that these drugs aren’t a universal solution, and for sustained weight loss and significant health improvements, bariatric surgery remains a highly effective option. As demand for weight loss interventions increases, understanding the long-term efficacy and suitability of different approaches is crucial.
For Jennie Mixon, of Bowie, Maryland, GLP-1 medications proved unsuitable due to an adverse reaction that required hospitalization. Facing Stage 3 liver failure and Type 2 diabetes while weighing 245 pounds, Mixon sought a more durable solution. Her journey highlights a growing conversation about the role of bariatric surgery in an era of increasingly accessible weight loss drugs.
Mixon underwent gastric bypass surgery in February 2024, a decision that dramatically altered her health trajectory. Today, she has lost half her body weight and no longer requires insulin. “They exhaust me, but it is a quality exhaustion now, compared to what it was,” Mixon shared. “I got my life back.” Her story underscores the potential for life-changing results with bariatric surgery, particularly for individuals with complex health conditions.
Bariatric Surgery: A Durable Solution
Dr. Yewande Alimi, a bariatric surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in D.C., acknowledges the benefits of GLP-1 medications but emphasizes the lasting impact of bariatric surgery. “The medications out there certainly can help patients really lose weight,” Alimi said, “But not every patient responds to GLP-1s. We also realize that the most durable approach to weight loss really still is, the data shows, bariatric surgery.” According to Alimi, only approximately 1% of patients who meet the criteria for obesity surgery actually undergo the procedure.
Addressing the Stigma Surrounding Bariatric Surgery
Despite its proven effectiveness, a stigma persists around bariatric surgery. Alimi notes that patients often feel it represents a personal failure. “People sometimes think that it’s a failure of themselves, of their inability to do something, that they’ve reached out to consider bariatric surgery. And that really isn’t the case,” she explained. Alimi emphasizes that obesity is a complex disease that impacts multiple organ systems, making surgical intervention a legitimate and often life-saving option.
In Mixon’s case, bariatric surgery not only resolved her diabetes – she hasn’t needed insulin since February 19, 2024 – but also restored her quality of life. She is now able to actively participate in activities with her grandchildren without experiencing debilitating exhaustion.
As GLP-1 medications continue to gain prominence, it’s important to remember that they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Bariatric surgery remains a powerful tool for achieving lasting weight loss and improving overall health, particularly for individuals facing significant health complications related to obesity. The decision of whether to pursue medication or surgery should be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional, considering individual circumstances and long-term health goals.
