The Post Office was widely criticized after dematerializing the red stamp. FRED TANNEAU / AFP

Postmen will be able to scan urgent letters at home from October, announced the CEO of La Poste.

Criticized after having dematerialized the red stamp, making senders dependent on digital access, La Poste will allow its postmen to scan urgent letters at home, its CEO announced Thursday in an interview with West France . “From October, postmen will be able to scan the letters of those who wish to do so at home to send them directly by e-red letter”declared Philippe Wahl to the regional daily. “It will be enough to notify him when he passes or it will be possible to call 3631 to see his postman the next day,” he adds.

Six billion letters delivered in 2023

The current service allows you to scan, at home or in a post office before 8:00 p.m., an urgent letter then printed and distributed the next day by La Poste. This service costs 1.49 euros, compared to 1.43 euros for the old red stamp, and is used by “6700 people every day”, according to the CEO, who has been in office for ten years. La Poste announced at the end of July that the prices of physical stamps would increase by an average of 8.3% on January 1, 2024, in a context of inflation. The price of the red e-letter will remain unchanged.

Philippe Wahl also recognizes in this river interview, for which the readers of West France were asked to ask questions and express criticism, that the “communication was not good” on the red e-stamp service, often criticized since it was put into service. “This year, we are going to deliver 6 billion letters, compared to 18 billion in 2008 (…) People are using letters less and less but, at the same time, they want nothing to change,” he declared in response to the criticism, recognizing however that we “probably don’t send love letters with the red e-stamp.”
