A Symphony of Light: Celebrating Art and Innovation
The heart of Vivid Sydney is its mesmerizing light walk, a free spectacle featuring projections and installations across the city. This year, the light walk will showcase prominent Australian artists, with a special focus on the works of the late Australian artist and queer activist David McDiarmid.
Kiss of Light: McDiarmid’s Legacy Illuminated
Named after one of McDiarmid’s most iconic works, “kiss of Light” will transform the Sydney Opera House sails with animated versions of his vibrant paintings and designs. This tribute celebrates McDiarmid’s enduring impact on art and activism.
Fashion and Indigenous Art Take Center Stage
Adding to the visual feast, fashion designers Romance Was Born will adorn the facade of Customs House with their unique designs. Vincent Namatjira,a Western Aranda artist,will illuminate the Museum of Contemporary Art with his work “King Dingo,” mirroring his 2024 Sydney exhibition. Namatjira gained attention in 2024 when Gina Rinehart reportedly requested the removal of his portrait of her from the National Gallery of Australia, part of his “Australia in Color” series (The Guardian).

First Nations Storytelling and Physical Theater
The firetalk series at Barangaroo will focus on First Nations storytelling, providing a platform for Indigenous voices. Additionally, physical-theatre company Legs on the Wall will present a new work titled “Endling.” Legs on the Wall previously gained attention at the 2022 Sydney Festival with a performance featuring a dancer suspended above sydney Harbour on a melting block of ice.
