New Delhi: According to a report, India is one of the ten countries where 60 percent of maternal and newborn deaths occur in the world. India is also on the list with a birth rate of 51 percent. The World Health Organization, UNICEF and UNSPA released the report at the International Maternal Newborn Health Conference (2023).
According to estimates, 0.29 million maternal deaths, 1.9 million perinatal deaths and 2.3 million neonatal deaths occurred worldwide in 2020-2021.
Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South Asia reported the highest number of deaths.
In 2020, 78,88,000 deaths were reported from India out of a total of 4.5 million deaths worldwide. Meanwhile, India accounts for 17 percent of the global child birth rate.
The conference is being held in South Africa. According to the progress report of the Neonatal Action Plan (ENAP) and Ending Maternal Mortality (EPMM), the health status of pregnant women, mothers and children has remained unchanged for eight years.
“Maternal and newborn deaths are increasing worldwide. The covid virus has also set back the health care they need.
To have better results in this regard, something needs to be done differently. Better investments in primary health care need to be made,’ said WHO Director of Maternal and Child Health, Dr. Anshu Banerjee said.
Maternal and infant mortality rates have been decreasing since 2000, but in 2015, deaths were increasing once more, said Dr. Dr. Allysyn Moran told the media.
“If we want to make progress by 2030, we will have to work hard. For that, life-saving interventions are needed to ensure quality pregnancy and postnatal care for women and newborns,’ he said.
Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and China are the other countries with the highest death rate.
According to the report, changes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide, climate change and other emergencies are the reasons for the increase in maternal and child mortality.
