Picross creators think it’s ‘harder than ever’ to collaborate with Nintendo

Norichika Meguro, executive director of Jupiter Corporation, the Japanese company responsible for the Picross saga, explained in a recent exclusive interview with VGC the difficulties that arise when collaborating with Nintendo. Broadly speaking, Megura has indicated that his development team wants to work with the Big N on a collaborative project for the 30th anniversary of the Picross saga in 2025, but that they have encountered certain problems in getting the company that owns Super Mario would “say yes” to their proposal. Apparently, this situation would have to do with the fact that Nintendo is the owner of the Picross name, while the “systems behind the puzzle games” are owned by Jupiter.
“We’re looking forward to making these collaborations happen, but it’s pretty much up to Nintendo, and they call the shots, not us. We want to celebrate Picross’s 30th anniversary in 2025, and we’ve approached Nintendo, but it’s been very difficult to get their approval,” Meguro said in the interview.
“Going through their approval process has become more difficult than ever, so the easiest way to work with Nintendo is to publish something with our own IP, and not the other way around, when a developer pitches it to Nintendo and waits for it. Nintendo provides you with the IP for the collaboration to take place,” he added to his previous comments.

“Rise of the Triad: LUDICROUS EDITION”, which was announced as a new edition compatible with the new generation console at “Realms Deep 2022” broadcast last September, and the release date was decided on July 31, 2023 the other day, last night publisher New Blood Interactive announced a slight postponement of the console version. According to New Blood Interactive CEO Dave Oshry, the postponement was decided due to some issues with the submission/approval process for the console version, and the PC version will be delivered on July 31 as planned.
