When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, many countries in the West quickly agreed to impose sanctions on Russia. In particular, the sensitive armaments industry and machines used to manufacture weapons saw strict export blockades in the USA, EU countries, Japan and Switzerland. The small island of Taiwan in East Asia also quickly condemned the attack. Taiwan is far from Ukraine, but the attack was a turning point on the democratically ruled island: China has been threatening for years to annex the island to the People’s Republic by force if necessary.
