Tarleton State’s Sathyanathan Wins NCAA Indoor Long Jump Title | NCAA Championships 2026

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — In a historic moment for Tarleton State University, Lokesh Sathyanathan captured the title in the men’s long jump at the 2026 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, becoming the first Texan to win an NCAA Division I national championship. His remarkable leap of 8.21 meters, achieved on Friday evening at the Randal Tyson Track Center, not only secured him the gold medal but too set a recent Indian national record and a program record for the Texans.

Sathyanathan’s performance was particularly impressive as he became the first Indian-born athlete to claim the men’s Indoor NCAA Individual title since the event’s inception in 1965. He is now credited with owning the top three indoor jumps by an Indian-born athlete, a testament to his hard perform and dedication.

“I’m honestly a little speechless,” said Tarleton State head coach Bobby Carter. “To win a national championship at a meet this deep and this competitive is incredibly special. I’m really happy for Lokesh and proud of the work he has position in to craft it happen.”

Record-Breaking Performance

During the competition, Sathyanathan was the only jumper to record two leaps of 8.15 meters or more. After starting with a jump of 7.89 meters, he found himself in a strong position but slipped to seventh place by the end of the preliminaries. However, he rebounded in the finals, delivering a personal best of 8.21 meters on his fourth attempt. This leap propelled him to the lead, which he maintained through the rest of the competition.

Sathyanathan’s final jump of 8.17 meters was not enough to surpass his winning mark, but it solidified his lead as none of the other competitors could match his 8.21 meters. He edged out De’Aundre Ward from Southern Mississippi, who finished with a best jump of 8.20 meters. The emotional culmination of the event saw Sathyanathan in tears of joy, fully realizing his achievement as he stepped onto the podium to accept his championship title.

Team Success and Other Highlights

In addition to Sathyanathan’s victory, Prestina Ochonogor also made waves by earning First Team All-American status with her fifth-place finish in the women’s long jump. This marked her highest finish at any NCAA Championships, improving upon her previous eighth-place finishes in both indoor and outdoor events last year.

Ochonogor’s best jump of 6.44 meters came during her first attempt, placing her in fourth initially, but she ultimately finished in fifth after several strong performances from other competitors. Coach Carter praised her for her growth and competitive spirit, hinting at even greater potential for the outdoor season ahead.

Scoring and Future Competitions

Thanks to Sathyanathan’s 10 points and Ochonogor’s four, the Texans are currently tied for sixth place in the men’s standings and are in 18th place for the women following the first day of competition. The men’s team, having no further competitors in the championships, will finish with those 10 points, while the women still have a chance to improve their standing.

Victoria Cameron, another standout for the Texans, is expected to compete in the 60-meter finals on Saturday. She recorded the second fastest time in the preliminaries, clocking in at 7.09 seconds. This performance marks her third sub-7.10 second run this season, making her a strong contender for another potential national title.

Other notable performances included Lauren Roy, who earned Second Team All-American honors in both the 60 meters and the 200 meters. Whereas she did not qualify for the finals in either event, her efforts contribute to the overall success of the Tarleton State track and field team.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 NCAA Indoor National Championships will continue with Victoria Cameron’s race expected to take place at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday. With the Texans already making history, there is palpable excitement about what the upcoming events may hold. The team’s performances thus far have set a positive tone, and there is potential for further achievements as they compete for national titles.

As Tarleton State celebrates this significant milestone in its athletic history, the community looks forward to the continued success of its athletes. Fans and supporters are encouraged to follow the events closely and share in the pride of their team’s accomplishments.
