Team USA WBC: Slow Start & Concerns After Brazil Win | 2026 World Baseball Classic

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

HOUSTON – Team USA began its quest for a World Baseball Classic title with a dominant 15-5 victory over Brazil on Friday, but the offensive performance wasn’t as explosive as many anticipated. Despite a lineup boasting some of Major League Baseball’s biggest stars, including captain Aaron Judge, the Americans relied heavily on walks and struggled with runners in scoring position.

The win moves Team USA to 1-0 in Group B, but the game highlighted areas for improvement as they prepare to face tougher competition. While the final score suggests a comfortable margin, the game was closer than it appeared for much of the night, with Brazil hanging around until a late-inning surge by the Americans.

Judge wasted no time making his presence felt, launching a first-inning home run – his very first swing of the tournament – to grant the U.S. An early lead. According to MLB.com, the two-run blast traveled 405 feet and left the bat at 106.5 mph. However, that would be the team’s only home run of the night.

Brazil actually out-homered Team USA in the contest, with 20-year-old Lucas Ramirez, son of former Boston Red Sox star Manny Ramirez, hitting two home runs. The Americans found themselves in a tighter game than expected, not leading by more than two runs until the fifth inning when they extended their advantage to 7-1. Brazil responded with a three-run rally in the seventh, capped off by a home run from Victor Mascai.

The Americans’ offense ultimately broke through in the ninth inning, with seven consecutive players reaching base to pad their lead. Despite the late surge, the team’s overall offensive output was characterized by 17 walks and a 5-for-21 performance with runners in scoring position. Team USA posted only three extra-base hits against Brazil – Judge’s home run and two doubles from Brice Turang.

Stars Align, But Chemistry Still Building

The roster, announced February 5, 2026, features a remarkable collection of talent, including Judge, Bryce Harper, Paul Goldschmidt, and Clayton Kershaw, combining for 65 All-Star Game selections, as reported by USA Baseball. Manager Mark DeRosa emphasized the importance of team bonding, with players spending time together both on and off the field. According to ESPN, the team even hosted 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, who stressed the importance of winning, telling the team that “second place is not going to get it done.”

What’s Next for Team USA

Despite the uneven offensive performance, Team USA demonstrated its potential and secured a crucial opening-day victory. The Americans will look to refine their approach at the plate and build chemistry as they continue through the tournament. Their next challenge comes Saturday against Great Britain, followed by games against Mexico and Italy to complete Group B play. The team will require to identify more consistent offensive production to contend for the championship, but the raw talent is undeniably present.
