Instant messaging app Telegram has been for several months considered as an alternative to WhatsApp, especially when it comes to privacy.
However, this is an error according to Moxie Marlinspike, founder of Signal, who believes that Telegram is not safer than applying Meta (Facebook). On Twitter, he said in a thread that Telegram is not “encrypted messaging”.
The information is saved on the servers of Telegram
“It’s amazing to me that after all this time, almost all of the media coverage of Telegram always calls it “encrypted messaging”. Telegram has many great features, but in terms of privacy and data collection, there is no worse choice ”, he let see on the social network.
Indeed, according to Moxie Marlinspike, all messages, contacts and groups are saved on the servers of Telegram, allowing the application to read them at any time. To justify his claims, the founder of Signal proposed a test.
“Delete Telegram, install it on a brand new phone and register with your number. You will immediately see all your conversation history, all your contacts, all the media you have shared, all your groups. Comment ? Everything was on their servers, in the clear ”he made clear.
For Moxie Marlinspike, the fact that we attribute to Telegram the name “encrypted messaging” is explained by the fact that the application offers a “very limited” secret mode, which is not activated by default.
In this sense, he let it be known that Facebook Messenger uses this same way of doing things, stressing however that the secret mode of this one is less limited than that of Telegram.
As it concerns WhatsApp, remember that exchanges are end-to-end encrypted by default. This means that the information is not readable when it goes to Facebook’s servers.
