The world’s tallest teenager is exploring a new athletic arena: football.
Olivier Rioux,a seven-foot-nine centre for the Florida basketball team and a member of the Under-19 Canadian national team, recently participated in a workout with the Gators’ football squad.
rioux, hailing from Terrebonne, Quebec, donned a Florida helmet.Coaches were interested in his exceptional wingspan for potential use on special teams, specifically in blocking field goals and extra points.
“I like the idea,” gators basketball coach Todd Golden commented at a booster event. “I give them credit for trying it.”
However, Rioux, who weighs 305 pounds, has an 11-inch vertical leap. This limited his ability to block any kicks effectively during the demonstration.
“They were a little disappointed,” Golden shared.
Fortunately,Rioux has his primary role with the basketball team. He is expected to see some court time this fall after redshirting his freshman year.
While playing time may be limited due to the return of the national champions’ entire frontcourt, he could feature in late-game situations. Golden has even considered using rioux to defend inbound passes, a tactic he executed successfully in the FIBA U19 World Cup.
His defensive play previously led to a turnover and a three-pointer just before halftime against the United States.
