Tehran Skies Darken After Alleged Israeli Strikes on Oil Depots

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

The skies over parts of Tehran darkened on Sunday following overnight Israeli strikes targeting oil depots, with thick plumes of smoke rising above the Iranian capital, according to reports from Iranian media. The attacks mark a significant escalation in regional tensions, occurring in the second week of a military campaign initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28th, according to Bulgarian National News Agency (BGNES).

“Although there is cloud cover in Tehran today, the current darkening of the sky is not natural and is due to a combination of smoke and clouds,” a representative from the Iranian Meteorological Organization’s crisis center stated, as reported by the state news agency IRNA. Authorities have issued warnings regarding potential health risks from sulfur and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, particularly if combined with rainfall. Residents are advised to remain indoors if possible should precipitation occur, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

Israel confirmed conducting strikes against several oil depots in Tehran overnight, stating they were used to supply military infrastructure, as reported by the German Press Agency (DPA). The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also confirmed that an oil refinery had been targeted, according to Iranian state television IRIB. The attacks follow a pattern of escalating actions, including a previous strike by Israel on an oil storage facility in Tehran on Saturday evening, as reported by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

The strikes come amid increasingly strong rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has indicated a willingness to pursue complete military victory over Iran. Trump stated on Saturday that negotiations would be unnecessary if Iranian leaders were killed and the Iranian army destroyed, adding, “Unconditional surrender. That will happen when they surrender or when they can no longer fight and there is no one to do it,” according to Actualno.com.

Iranian Retaliation and Regional Impact

In response to the attacks, Iran has launched retaliatory strikes in the region. On Sunday, Iran attacked the airport in Kuwait and a desalination plant in Bahrain – a critical source of drinking water, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported. These attacks represent a broadening of the conflict beyond Iranian territory. Earlier, News.bg reported that the U.S. And Israel struck five petroleum facilities in and around Tehran, resulting in four fatalities.

The attacks on oil infrastructure raise concerns about potential disruptions to global energy markets. Iran possesses significant oil reserves, and damage to these facilities could impact production and supply. The targeting of Bahrain’s desalination plant also highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the region, potentially exacerbating humanitarian concerns.

Escalation and International Response

The current conflict began with the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28th, triggering the initial wave of attacks and counterattacks. Israel has reportedly utilized over 80 fighter jets in operations targeting military facilities in and around Tehran, including infrastructure belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, military universities, ballistic missile storage, and underground command centers, BGNES reported.

The situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation. The international community is closely monitoring developments, and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict are ongoing, though President Trump has indicated he is not interested in negotiations with Iran. The next steps remain uncertain, but continued military action appears likely in the short term.

As the conflict enters its second week, the focus will be on Iran’s response to the latest Israeli strikes and the potential for further regional involvement. The international community will be watching closely for any signs of de-escalation or attempts to initiate diplomatic talks. Share your thoughts and reactions in the comments below.
