Tesla has discontinued its Dojo supercomputer project, a move signaling a strategic realignment in the company’s artificial intelligence efforts. The decision comes despite CEO Elon Musk’s recent statements in July indicating the planned debut of dojo 2 next year.

Originally conceived to process and analyze the vast amounts of video data generated by Tesla vehicles – enabling an autonomous driving system reliant solely on vision – Dojo was also intended to support the development of the Optimus humanoid robot. The supercomputer utilized Tesla’s custom-designed D1 chip, aiming to reduce reliance on external hardware providers like NVIDIA.

Though, internal shifts and a change in technological direction prompted the shutdown. Approximately 20 employees transitioned to a new AI startup, Densityai, while the remaining Dojo team members have been reassigned to other Tesla projects. The project’s head, Peter bannon, has also left the company.

According to Musk, the decision stemmed from the realization that all development paths were converging on the AI6 chip. “Once it was clear all roads led to AI6,I had to shut down Dojo and make some difficult personnel decisions,as Dojo 2 was now a dead end,” Musk explained on X (formerly Twitter). He described the future of the project as “Dojo 3” living on through numerous AI6 chips integrated onto a single platform.

Tesla will now concentrate its resources on the development of both AI5 and AI6 chips, the latter being manufactured by Samsung. musk believes both are “at least quite good for training.” While AI5 chips were announced in 2024, performance data remains unpublished, and previous reports suggested they may not meet initial expectations.

Launched in 2019, the Dojo project represented Tesla’s ambition to create specialized AI hardware optimized for automotive applications, offering a competitive edge and reducing dependence on external suppliers.
