Thailand’s Cabaret Show: Marija Naumova & Stars Encounter Transgender Performers

Latvian singer Marija Naumova, known for her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, has shared her nuanced reaction to a cabaret performance featuring transgender artists during a recent filming of the travel show “Četri uz koferiem” (Four on a Suitcase) in Thailand. The experience prompted reflection on the performers’ lives and the societal context surrounding their work, revealing a more somber undercurrent to the exotic locale.

The show, which as well stars musician Jānis Pētersons, chef Elmārs Tannis, and stylist Dita Grauda, took the group to Thailand to explore its diverse cultural landscape. A visit to a vibrant cabaret show, showcasing performers who identify as transgender, became a focal point of discussion. While the performances were visually striking, Naumova’s response highlighted a deeper consideration of the personal sacrifices and potential health risks associated with the artistry.

The group initially believed they were heading to a cinema, misled by Jānis Pētersons, who was responsible for the day’s plans. Upon arriving at a building selling popcorn and taking their seats, it became clear they were in for a different kind of entertainment. The performance itself, featuring men embodying feminine personas, sparked a range of reactions from the group. Elmārs Tannis admitted to being initially confused, stating, “I’m trying to figure out who is who and who is what – a man or a woman,” according to reports from Santa.lv.

Naumova, having experienced high-caliber cabaret performances previously, found this particular show distinctly different. “I have been to very good level cabarets and, of course, I don’t even seek to compare. This was something else and here the main thing was something else again,” she stated, as reported by LA.lv. Her concern stemmed from what she had read about the health implications and shortened lifespans often associated with the surgeries and procedures undertaken by the performers. “At least, as much as I’ve read, these people don’t live long after such operations, so, I was a little sad,” she shared.

Despite the emotional weight of the experience, the group also encountered moments of levity. Elmārs Tannis found himself the center of attention, receiving a kiss from one of the show’s stars, and even stumbled on stage during a brief appearance. “I didn’t know if I really wanted to do it, but we went to do it, and I tripped on stage. I’ve done things like that jokingly, but this was for real – I tripped and everyone got worried. Everyone – girls, boys, whoever they were there. And I even got a sweet kiss from one or one!” he recounted.

While statistics regarding the prevalence of transgender individuals in Thailand are not readily available, reports indicate a generally accepting and inclusive attitude within Thai society. Transgender individuals are represented in a variety of professions, from service industries to beauty and wellness, as noted by Santa.lv. Jānis Pētersons acknowledged the importance of understanding local traditions to fully grasp the phenomenon, expressing surprise at the transformations he witnessed: “Well, there’s no way that’s a guy!”

Admission to the cabaret show costs 20 euros, with an additional 13 euros for a photo opportunity with the performers. Naumova opted out of the photo session, her thoughts preoccupied with the complexities of the performers’ choices and the potential cost to their well-being.

The experience highlights the often-unseen realities behind the spectacle of entertainment, prompting viewers to consider the personal stories and sacrifices that contribute to the vibrant cultural landscape of Thailand. As “Četri uz koferiem” continues its journey, it will be interesting to see how the group navigates further cultural encounters and the perspectives they bring to light.
