A little history
The November 25, 1960, three Dominican sisters were found dead. Minerva, Patria and María Teresa Mirabal. The three women, active militants against the Trujillo regime, were murdered by order of the dictator. Their bodies were found mangled inside a car sunk in a ravine. The murder of “the butterflies” -that’s how they were known- were the trigger for the fall of Trujillo.
Since 1981, Latin America commemorates the Day Against Gender Violence in honor of the Mirabal sisters. In 1999, the UN declared the November 25 as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
