“The Career and Controversies of Osama Atar: Insights into Belgium’s Prisoner Transfer Policy”

2023-04-23 04:00:00

By studying the career of Osama Atar, we learn that in 2010, pSeveral elected officials in Belgium have pressured Foreign Affairs to encourage efforts to get him out of prison in Iraq, in particular because of a kidney tumor from which he was supposed to suffer. The International Red Cross, which had been able to visit him in his Iraqi jail, had however warned Belgium that the detainee seemed to have only an ulcer. Osama Atar was then purging a heavy sentence for his illegal entry into Iraq and his engagement alongside the fighters of the first Western coalition. The campaign to transfer him to Belgium will end in September 2012 but it had been agreed with the authorities on the spot that Osama Atar would no longer be authorized to travel. Obviously, this condition was not respected, a new Belgian passport having been issued to him in the months following his return, a “sesame” who helped him to join over a journey via Tunisia a second time the Iraqi-Syrian combat zones, where he will become one of the key players within the service responsible for planning attacks in Europe.
