The Case of Kamila Valieva: Russian Olympic Committee Denounces CAS Decision as Declaration of War on Russian Sport

Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, called Monday “policy” the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to suspend for four years the young Russian skater Kamila Valieva, whose positive test for a banned substance had splashed the Beijing 2022 Olympics.

In fact, war has been declared on Russian sport and, as we see, any means is good“, denounced the Russian Olympic Committee, deeming the sanction targeting the athlete “very severe”.

Kamila Valieva did not contest her positive test at the end of 2021 for trimetazidine, a substance supposed to improve blood circulation, banned since 2014 by the World Anti-Doping Agency, and detected in tiny quantities in her body.

But the young girl, then aged 15, had invoked a “contamination via cutlery” shared with her grandfather, treated with trimetazidine following the installation of an artificial heart, and who takes her to training every day.
