The Controversial Ban on Fluorine Wax at the World Cup: Disqualification and Disbelief

Athletes warned regarding exactly this kind of situation before the start of the World Cup in Sölden. The FIS introduced a ban on fluorine wax before the season and threatened the ski aces with disqualification if the environmentally harmful wax was used. Basically a good idea, but it didn’t seem to be fully developed yet. Associations and athletes repeatedly expressed their concerns that the measuring devices were not accurate, nor was there contamination on the slopes.

The FIS tried to calm things down on Friday, speaking in the person of Secretary General Michel Vion. The official said they were absolutely ready and would use the necessary tact. There wasn’t much of it to be seen the next day. Ranghild Mowinckel was disqualified following the first round of the women’s giant slalom, burst into tears following this decision and was stunned on the phone. There were no interviews, only the FIS explained itself. A representative of the world association said that a significantly higher value was measured for the Norwegian than for everyone else. This extremely high value would have left no other option.

The decision caused absolute disbelief not only at Mowinckel, but also at her ski outfitter Head. According to head race director Rainer Salzgeber, the “worst case” had occurred. “The service man was at the FIS control measurement with this racing ski, with exactly the same preparation, and everything was green. Today it is dark red. We have no explanation for it,” said Salzgeber and also criticized the world association’s actions. “It’s like the entire structure at the FIS, there are too many chiefs running around. It is absolutely inexplicable for us, the value was now far too high. This is really a disaster for us. We’ll see what comes out and have to analyze how this might have happened.”
