Only 11% of French people declared themselves regular wine consumers in 2022. In 2015, 16% drank wine daily or almost. That’s a decline of 5 points. A downward trend which seems to be a lasting part of the morals of the French who, in 1980, more than 50% took pleasure in swallowing balloons on a daily basis.

Are the French losing their good taste in wine? Or are they paying more and more attention to their health? In any case, fewer and fewer people drink wine daily. From now on, we know the difference between having a glass of wine or quenching a thirst with a carafe of water. In 2022, only 11% of French people say they are regular wine consumers, compared to 19% frequent occasional consumers, 32% rare occasional consumers and 37% non-consumers.

These are the results of the latest five-year survey on wine consumption in France 2020 from Ipsos Observer, carried out for FranceAgriMer and CNIV. “ The results presented in this summary were produced from a survey carried out from May 27 to August 9, 2022 (the Covid pandemic having delayed the field) face-to-face at home with 3,513 people representative of the population French aged 18 and over. The survey sample is constructed using the quota method », Explain the promoters of the study. The downward trend among regular consumers has been sustained since the launch of the series of surveys, the first of which dates back to 1980.

From 1980 to 2022, the number of French regular wine consumers has been divided by five

In 1980, frequent wine consumers represented almost more than half of the population with 51%, compared to only 19% of non-consumers, while the remaining 30% was shared between rare and frequent occasional consumers. In 1985, the rate of regular wine consumers fell to 42%, then to 30% in 1990, to 28% in 1995, to 24% in 2000, to 21% in 2005, to 17% in 2010, to 16% in 2015, rising to 11% in 2022.

In detail, the frequency of wine consumption, in 2022, varies mainly depending on age, the survey reveals, with in particular a “ greatest disparity among non-consumers: 27% of those over 50 never consume wine. They are 38% among 35-49 year olds and almost 1 in 2 for those under 35 ».

If the figures clearly show this downward trend in alcohol consumption, beer (57% of consumers) seems, on the other hand, increasingly popular with the French, with an increase of 3 points compared to 2015. This is the new trend among young people who generally seem more inclined towards beer, cocktails… Drinks more popular as an aperitif than wines. That being said, wine consumption, which is declining due to the new trend of renewing generations, remains, for all consumers, almost exclusively linked to meals, the survey concludes.
