The Swiss women’s team will not play the final phase of the Euro next June.
Damien Leyrolles’ players lost all hope of qualifying Thursday in Orenburg, Russia after their loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina (62-67) and the victory of Russia against Estonia (79-35).
The Swiss, however, did better than resist against a team that had beaten them by 19 points in November 2019 on the second day of the qualifiers. They thus led 42-34 in the 24th, and returned to a length (58-59) at 3’28 ” from the ‘buzzer’ when they were 6 points behind (52-58) in the 35th.
Bosnia-Herzegovina held up in the ‘money time’ thanks above all to its player of American origin Courtney Alexandria Hurt (30 points, 13 rebounds). Switzerland could have snatched an overtime, but the excellent Evita Herminjard (23 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) missed the target by 3 points at 62-65 with 26 ” to play.
Switzerland, whose two wins in this group C were obtained against Estonia, are therefore eliminated before their last match. It will complete its campaign on Saturday against Russia, which has not yet officially its ticket in its pocket despite its 1st place. Second with the same number of points (9), Bosnia-Herzegovina is however guaranteed to play the final phase in Spain and France.
