The Earthquake Effect: Taylor Swift’s Concerts and Seattle’s Sports History

2023-07-29 12:57:19

Cheering and raging fans of the US pop singer Taylor Swift triggered a magnitude 2.3 earthquake during their most recent concerts on July 22nd and 23rd in Seattle/USA. This was published by seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach from Western Washington University on X (formerly Twitter). It wasn’t the first measured, but not felt, earthquake at Seattle stadium.

A similarly strong earthquake that was not triggered by processes in the earth’s crust last had it in 2011 at a football game Seattle Seahawks given. It was measured following a touchdown by the Seatle Seahawks in the last minute of the game and went down in history as “Beast Quake” – named following the team’s running back. However, the jubilation didn’t last as long as the “Swifties'” bluster.
