THE ELIMINATION OF CHILD LABOR AT THE HEART OF THE 5TH WORLD CONFERENCE OF THE ILO

The city of Durban in eastern South Africa will host the Fifth Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labor from May 15-20, 2022. According to the statement from the International Labor Organization (ILO), this conference will be held precisely at the International Convention Center (ICC), in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

According to the document, more than 4,000 delegates – representatives of governments, trade unions, the private sector, civil society, regional and international organizations, think tanks, universities, young people and children from around the world whole, will take part in this meeting.

Child labor remains a concern. This is why the opportunity will be seized by the participants to discuss “good practices” and identify “gaps” and “urgent measures” to be taken “to fight” once morest child labour.

Already, “the conference comes at a critical moment. Despite progress in many regions, 160 million children – almost one in ten children worldwide – are still forced to work. The numbers are on the rise and the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to undo years of progress,” the statement said.

The United Nations (UN), which had declared 2021 the “International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour”, noting the challenges posed, had insisted on the urgency of accelerating progress towards the objective set by the target 8.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely the elimination of child labor in all its forms by 2025.
