Franz Joseph’s Brothers – The Fateful Four

Emperor Franz Joseph had three brothers – the four were popularly known as the “Salt Princes” because their mother Sophie was only able to have children following a brine treatment in Bad Ischl. With his 68 years of reign, the eldest, Franz Joseph, overshadowed the rest of his family, which was not easy for the brothers. Maximilian, who desperately wanted to become a crowned head, was tempted to become a puppet ruler in Mexico and returned from there in a coffin. Ludwig Viktor was considered an enfant terrible because of his homosexuality and had to go into hiding in Kleßheim following a public scandal. Karl Ludwig’s marriage to Maria Annunziata ultimately resulted in the two later heirs to the throne, Franz Ferdinand and Charles I.
