The Forgotten Feminist Icon: Shere Hite and Her Groundbreaking Book on Women’s Sexual Experiences

Shere Hite published one of the best-selling books of all time in the mid-1970s. With her “Hite Report. The Sexual Experience of Women” she created a comprehensive and multi-layered picture of women’s sexual experiences for the first time. Hite became famous for this: in the 1980s she was considered a feminist icon, but she didn’t fit the image of what a feminist should look like at the time. Bright red lipstick, a hairstyle that was reminiscent of the early Marylin Monroe, transparent or tight-fitting clothing and erotically posing: Hite did not allow herself to be pressed into cliché images. The feminist pioneer has now largely been forgotten. Even in circles interested in women’s politics, hardly anyone knows the name Shere Hite anymore. She “changed the world with her book,” says cultural scientist Mithu Sanyal.
