The Future of Guest Houses in Wallonia: Facing the Challenges of Uberization and Administrative Simplification

2023-07-23 10:20:25

André Mélisse, owner of a guest house in Falaën, is worried. “We are afraid of uberization. The guest house is a real investment. All these Airbnb rooms, we find them at 40 € and we offer them at 130 € per night. The others are choices of dough. We are choices of the heart.”

For the Walloon Minister of Tourism, Valérie De Bue, this administrative simplification is necessary for the readability of both customers and players in the sector. “Too many labels kill the label. The desire is to encourage the entire sector to request registration and certification to have a better knowledge of the sector and therefore better meet its needs as well.”

Enough to integrate in the future a whole part of the accommodation, only half of which is officially registered in Wallonia.

The reform of the Walloon Tourism Code should officially materialize by the end of the year.
