The HCP feels the pulse of business leaders for the 3rd quarter of 2023 – Today Morocco

31% of companies in the manufacturing industry have encountered difficulties in sourcing raw materials, mainly those of foreign origin.

The HCP has just revealed the results of business surveys of companies in the manufacturing industry, extractive industry, energy industry, environmental industry and construction sectors, for the third quarter 2023. In his note he also highlights the assessments of business leaders for the same sectors for the 2nd quarter of 2023.

The owners of companies operating in the manufacturing industry anticipate stability in their production during the 3rd quarter of 2023. According to the latest indicators from the High Commission for Planning, these expectations would be due on the one hand to the growth in manufacturing activity. “Metallurgy” and “Food industry” and, on the other hand, to a decrease in that of “Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products”, “Chemical industry” and “Industry automobile”. In terms of employment, manufacturers anticipate stability in the number of employees employed. Concerning the extractive industry, business leaders in this sector expect an increase in their production for the third quarter of 2023. “This development would be mainly attributable to an increase in the production of phosphates. In terms of the number of employees employed, the bosses of this sector anticipate a reduction,” indicates the same source. As for energy production, the bosses interviewed anticipate an increase attributable to the increase in “Production and distribution of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning”. Employment in this sector would experience stable numbers.

Over the same period, companies in the environmental industry anticipate stability in production, particularly in “water capture, treatment and distribution” activities, and stability in the number of employees employed. As for the construction sector, the forecasts of business leaders in the construction sector for the third quarter of 2023 show, overall, an increase in activity. “This development would result, on the one hand, from the expected increase in activity in “Civil Engineering” and, on the other hand, from the expected stagnation of activity in the “Building Construction” branch. This development in the construction sector would be accompanied by stability in the number of employees employed,” underlines the same source. If we focus on the 2nd quarter of 2023, it turns out that production in the manufacturing industry would have experienced an increase due to an increase in production in the branches of the “Food industry”, “Manufacture of metal products, except machinery and equipment” and “Manufacture of electrical equipment”, and a drop in production in the branches of “Automotive industry” and “ Paper and cardboard industry. In this sense, the sector’s order books are at a normal level according to business leaders. Employment for its part would have experienced stability. Concerning the production capacity utilization rate (TUC) in the manufacturing industry, it would have stood at 76%. Over the same period, it should also be noted that 31% of companies in the manufacturing industry encountered difficulties in sourcing raw materials, mainly those of foreign origin. “Inventories of raw materials during this quarter were at a normal level and cash flow was considered “difficult” according to 23% of bosses. By sector, this proportion reaches almost 27% in “Food industries”, reports the same source. At the same time, the production of the Extractive Industry would have experienced an increase during the second quarter attributable to an increase in the production of phosphates.

The sales prices of products in this sector would have seen a decrease and employment would have seen a drop. Regarding the production of the energy industry, it would be increasing mainly due to the increase in “Production and distribution of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning”. Order books would be at a normal level. For its part, employment would have seen an increase. In its note, the HCP also reveals that the production of the environmental industry would have experienced stability during the 2nd quarter of 2023 attributable to a stagnation in the activity of “Water capture, treatment and distribution”. As for the order books in this sector, they would have settled at a normal level and employment would have been stable. During the same period, activity in the construction sector was stable. “This development would have been due, on the one hand, to the increase in activity in “Civil Engineering” and in the “Specialized Construction Works” branch and, on the other hand, to the stability in the construction branch. “Building construction”. Order books in construction would have been at a normal level and employment would have been stable. Under these conditions, the production capacity utilization rate (TUC) in the construction sector would have stood at 69%,” reports the same source. Finally, it turns out that 29% of construction companies encountered difficulties supplying raw materials and cash flow was considered “difficult” by 41% of business leaders.
