Breaking News: Coronavirus Transmission Rebound and Future Pandemic Warnings
Catalonia, July 7, 2025 — The latest data from the Information System for the Surveillance of Infections in Catalonia (SIVIC) reveals a mild rebound in Coronavirus transmission. The estimated incidence has surged to 78 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, marking the highest rate this year. This comes after a previous week’s rate of 46.5 cases, indicating a significant rise in infections.
Diagnostic Surge and Variant Shift
Primary care has diagnosed 1,812 cases in the last week (June 30 to July 6), compared to 1,373 cases the week before. This surge is the highest diagnostic data recorded this year. Experts suggest that this resurgence is likely due to a change in the variant predominance, with the XFG variant now accounting for 71% of cases, according to the latest sequencing data from three weeks ago.
The SIVIC data, updated on Tuesday, shows that the coronavirus is the most predominant among respiratory viruses, making up 26% of samples. This is followed by parainfluenza (20%) and rinovirus (15.2%).
Expert Warning on Future Pandemics
Virologist Margarita del Val has cautioned that new pandemics are increasingly likely. Speaking at the 18th Annual Congress of Biotechnology BAC Málaga 2025, she highlighted several factors contributing to this risk, including urbanization, global travel, invasive species, and global warming. She also emphasized that an aging population increases vulnerability to infections.
Vaccination Effectiveness and Global Health
Five years after the start of vaccination, del Val underscored the effectiveness of focusing on the S protein to generate antibodies. She noted that the risk of dying from COVID-19 is between 100 and 10,000 times higher in non-vaccinated individuals. Additionally, she expressed concern over the lack of vaccines in Africa, which exacerbates mortality from several diseases. Some African countries are now investing in vaccine production and innovation to gain autonomy.
The continent has seen a high mortality rate from the monkeypox virus, with over 800 deaths in 2024, four times the number recorded in 2020. Del Val also noted that cases were detected in Spain but praised the public response, including sexual prevention measures and vaccination campaigns, which helped stop the virus’s spread.
