The History of Hygiene: From Courtiers to Queens, the Evolution of Daily Washing

The courtiers wrinkled their noses.

Today, doctors recommend that people perform water procedures daily to maintain proper hygiene and take care of their health. However, before the mass introduction of heating and running water, washing every day was extremely difficult. It is not surprising that in the Middle Ages many washed themselves at most several times throughout their lives.

The rulers were no exception. According to legend, Queen Isabella of Castile, who laid the foundation for a united Spain, was a terrible dirty woman. Some argue that in 53 years the ruler resorted to water procedures only twice. Allegedly, several times the queen made a vow that she would not wash or change clothes until her warriors were victorious.

However, not all historians agree with this interpretation. Experts are confident that rumors regarding Isabella the slob are at least exaggerated. Judging by the letters, the queen performed ablutions and visited the baths at least once a week.
